Non-Toxic Skincare

Non-toxic skincare means formulations free from the chemicals regulatory bodies and emerging research flag as endocrine disruptors, reproductive toxicants, or irritants. Leaf & Bird formulates this way by default: no parabens, no synthetic fragrance, no sulfates, no PEGs. Here’s what we avoid — and what we use instead. Also see our seed-oil-free skincare collection for the avoidance-list counterpart.

Ingredients we never use

Parabens & certain synthetic preservatives

Methylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben are the three parabens most frequently flagged by endocrine-disruption researchers. They mimic estrogen in the body, binding to estrogen receptors at low concentrations. While regulatory agencies consider them safe at approved cosmetic levels, the emerging science on cumulative low-dose exposure — particularly for people applying multiple products daily over years — gives pause. The ingredient-literate, who think about body-burden accumulation rather than single-product safety in isolation, are right to question them. We keep none of them in any Leaf & Bird formula. We use phenoxyethanol as our preservative where water-based formulas require it — more on that in our FAQ below.

Synthetic fragrance

The ingredient called “fragrance” or “parfum” on a label is a legally protected trade secret that can conceal dozens to hundreds of undisclosed chemical compounds — including phthalates, synthetic musks, and known sensitizers. The Environmental Working Group estimates that fragrance mixtures can contain up to 3,000 different chemicals, none of which need to be individually disclosed. For label-readers managing skin sensitivity, hormonal health, or children’s product safety, this is the single most important label omission to look for. Every Leaf & Bird product uses only the stated botanicals and organic essential oils listed by name in the INCI. Nothing hidden under “fragrance.”

Seed oils, PEGs, phthalates & oxybenzone

Phthalates are plasticizing chemicals used to extend synthetic fragrance and soften plastics — classified as endocrine disruptors at elevated exposures and found frequently in fragrance formulations. Oxybenzone, a chemical UV filter, has been shown to absorb into the bloodstream and has potential hormonal activity at sufficient exposure. PEGs (polyethylene glycols) are petroleum-derived emulsifiers that can carry impurities including ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane, depending on manufacturing conditions. Highly processed seed oils (sunflower, safflower, grapeseed) are oxidation-prone in skincare and increasingly scrutinized in functional health research. We skip all of them — not because every exposure is dangerous, but because none of them need to be there.

Our formulation standards (category vs our rule)

Category Conventional cosmetic rule Leaf & Bird rule
Preservatives Parabens or broad-spectrum synthetics (often unlabeled blends) Phenoxyethanol + ethylhexylglycerin where needed; tallow formulas are anhydrous (no preservative required)
Fragrance “Fragrance” or “parfum” — trade-secret blend, up to hundreds of undisclosed chemicals Named organic essential oils only; no synthetic fragrance or “parfum”
Surfactants Sulfates (SLS, SLES) or cocamidopropyl betaine from ambiguous sources No sulfates in any formula
Emollients Mineral oil, dimethicone, or processed seed oils Grass-fed beef tallow (ancestral) or plant actives (vitamin C, peptides, PDRN) — no mineral oil or dimethicone
UV protection Chemical filters including oxybenzone, octinoxate, homosalate We do not sell SPF products; we recommend mineral SPF from a trusted brand
Color Synthetic dyes (D&C Red, FD&C Blue, etc.) No synthetic dyes; formulas are naturally colored or uncolored
Packaging Conventional plastic with no restriction on plastic leaching Glass or BPA-free packaging; no PVC

Our non-toxic picks by concern

  1. #1 For brightening — Vegan PDRN Brightening Serum

If your goal is cleaner, more even skin tone without retinoids, synthetic brighteners, or harsh actives, the PDRN Brightening Serum is the workhorse. Non-animal-sourced polydeoxyribonucleotide signals fibroblasts to support skin renewal, while the acetyl hexapeptide-8 (Argireline) addresses fine lines without triggering the irritation cycle. Full INCI transparency. No synthetic fragrance, no parabens, no sulfates. One honest note: this formula contains phenoxyethanol, which we use at EWG-rated concentrations because the alternatives carry their own tradeoffs. See FAQ #3 for the full reasoning.

  2. #2 For daily moisture — Grass-Fed Tallow Cream

The simplest INCI list in the Leaf & Bird catalog: grass-fed beef tallow and organic essential oils. No water phase means no preservative is needed. No emulsifiers, no synthetic thickeners, no petroleum derivatives. The fatty acid profile of grass-fed tallow — stearic acid, oleic acid, palmitic acid, palmitoleic acid — closely mirrors human sebum, which is why the skin absorbs it efficiently. Available in Lemongrass & Lavender, Orange & Bergamot, and Peaceful Night. Note: this is an animal-derived ingredient — ancestrally sourced, no harsh actives, but not vegan.

  3. #3 For gentle daily antioxidants — Vitamin Glow Serum

The Vitamin Glow Serum uses 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid — a gentler, more stable vitamin C derivative that doesn’t require the low pH needed to activate L-ascorbic acid. Gentler on sensitive skin, less likely to degrade in the bottle, and free of synthetic fragrance, parabens, and sulfates. A good daily-use antioxidant layer for label-readers who want the brightening benefits of vitamin C without the irritation that sometimes comes with high-concentration L-AA formulas. Fully vegan.

  4. #4 For under-eyes — Peptide Eye Gel-Cream

The eye area is the first place most people compromise: the available products are either ineffective or loaded with synthetic fragrance and occlusive petrochemicals. The Peptide Eye Gel-Cream uses acetyl tetrapeptide-5, a clinically studied peptide that targets under-eye puffiness and the appearance of dark circles by supporting lymphatic drainage and capillary integrity. Vegan. No synthetic fragrance, no parabens. Lightweight gel-cream texture absorbs without migration into the eyes. Fragrance-free, which matters especially for the periorbital area.

  5. #5 For weekly detox — Dead Sea Mud Mask

The Dead Sea Mud Mask is the most mineral-dense formula in the catalog: kaolin, Dead Sea mud, and a short INCI list of supporting humectants. No synthetic fragrance, no parabens, no sulfates. Used once per week, the mineral clay draws out impurities, tightens pores, and delivers a temporary brightening effect that doesn’t rely on synthetic actives. A good reset-and-detox step for label-readers who want a once-weekly ritual that’s both effective and clean. Suitable for all skin types; patch-test if you have reactive skin.

What 'non-toxic' means to us

“Non-toxic” has no legal definition in the United States. The FDA does not regulate or certify the term. Any brand can print it on any label without meeting a single defined standard. That’s not a niche problem — it’s the reason the clean-beauty category is both compelling and confusing at the same time.

Here’s what Leaf & Bird means when we use the term: we formulate against the EWG Skin Deep database’s Category 1 and Category 2 hazard classifications, avoiding ingredients flagged as endocrine disruptors, reproductive toxicants, or strong sensitizers at typical use concentrations. We don’t chase the EWG Verified seal (which requires a paid certification process we haven’t yet pursued), but we do formulate to that standard. Every ingredient is listed with full INCI transparency. Nothing is hidden under “fragrance” or a trade-secret blend.

One honest disclosure: Leaf & Bird uses phenoxyethanol as a preservative in water-based formulas. Phenoxyethanol is rated 1–2 on EWG Skin Deep at cosmetic-use concentrations. It’s not a paraben. It’s the most widely used non-paraben broad-spectrum preservative in clean skincare, and it’s required in any water-based formula to prevent bacterial contamination. The alternatives — parabens, essential-oil-based preservation systems, high concentrations of ethanol — all carry their own tradeoffs. We’ve made an informed formulation decision and disclosed it transparently rather than hiding it in a blend. If you’d like the full reasoning, the PDRN Brightening Serum FAQ has a detailed breakdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Leaf & Bird EWG Verified?
We haven’t pursued EWG Verified certification yet — it’s a paid program that requires an application and ongoing review process. What we can say is that Leaf & Bird formulates to EWG Skin Deep standards: we avoid Category 1 and Category 2 hazard-rated ingredients, and we use full INCI transparency on every product. If and when we pursue the formal certification, we’ll update this page. In the meantime, you can check any Leaf & Bird ingredient individually on EWG’s Skin Deep database at ewg.org/skindeep.
How is 'non-toxic' regulated?
“Non-toxic” is not regulated. The FDA does not define the term, does not certify it, and does not require any specific standard before a brand can use it on a label. The same is true for “clean,” “natural,” and in most cases “green.” This is why brand-specific definitions matter. When you see “non-toxic” on a Leaf & Bird product, it means we formulate against EWG Skin Deep’s hazard framework, avoid Category 1 endocrine disruptors and reproductive toxicants, and publish full INCI lists. We define the term precisely because the regulatory gap means you can’t assume a definition — you have to ask.
Why do you use phenoxyethanol if you’re non-toxic?
Phenoxyethanol is a synthetic preservative rated 1–2 on EWG’s Skin Deep database at the concentrations used in cosmetics — that’s the lowest hazard tier. Any water-based formula (serum, gel, cream with a water phase) requires a preservative to prevent bacterial and mold contamination. The alternatives have real tradeoffs: parabens have well-documented endocrine concerns; essential-oil preservation systems can be sensitizing at effective concentrations; high-ethanol formulas are drying and irritating. Phenoxyethanol is the lowest-concern broad-spectrum option available at effective concentrations. We chose it deliberately, we use it at EWG-rated concentrations, and we disclose it in the INCI rather than hiding it. That transparency is part of what “non-toxic” means to us.
Is this safe for kids?
Most Leaf & Bird products are formulated with minimal actives and no synthetic fragrance, which makes them appropriate for older children as a starting point. The grass-fed tallow creams — with their simple two-ingredient INCI — have a long history of use on young skin. For babies and toddlers, we recommend the tallow cream and suggest a patch test first. For the serum range, children don’t generally need actives like PDRN or vitamin C, so we’d recommend sticking to simple barrier support until they’re older. Always consult a pediatrician for children with known skin conditions.
Is this pregnancy-safe?
Several Leaf & Bird products are well-suited to pregnancy. Our grass-fed tallow creams, Peptide Eye Gel-Cream, and Vitamin Glow Serum are generally pregnancy-friendly choices — no retinoids, no high-percentage salicylic acid, no synthetic fragrance, no hydroquinone. The PDRN Brightening Serum is newer and we recommend consulting your OBGYN before using it during pregnancy, as the combination of actives hasn’t been extensively studied in pregnant populations. For full trimester-by-trimester guidance, see our pregnancy-safe skincare page.
What’s the one thing most 'non-toxic' brands fail at?
Fragrance. Brands that avoid parabens, PEGs, and sulfates but still include “fragrance” or “parfum” in their INCI are making a significant omission. Synthetic fragrance is a legally protected trade secret that can contain dozens to hundreds of undisclosed chemicals — including phthalates, which are endocrine disruptors. EWG flags fragrance as one of the most problematic cosmetic ingredients precisely because the lack of disclosure makes individual safety assessment impossible. The cleanest thing a brand can do is either remove synthetic fragrance entirely or list every botanical by name. Leaf & Bird does the latter: every scent source in every formula is listed individually in the INCI.
What should I check on any non-toxic label?
Start with these three checks: (1) Does the INCI include “fragrance” or “parfum” as a catch-all entry? If yes, stop there — dozens of undisclosed chemicals may be hiding behind it. (2) Are parabens present? Look for methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, ethylparaben in the INCI. (3) Are there PEGs, phthalates, or sulfates listed? Beyond those three, cross-reference the full INCI against EWG Skin Deep at ewg.org/skindeep for any ingredient you don’t recognize. The database is free and lets you look up individual ingredients. A truly non-toxic brand publishes its full INCI list clearly and doesn’t rely on marketing terms alone.
